It was originally After World 8 version 2.0 but because the game has more levels, it also uses SMB2J items. The game starts from World 1 with the original SMB levels including some SMB2J levels to Afterworld 8 levels. Also, the original glitch effects are removed and most bugs are fixed from the previous Afterworld 8 version. SMB Extended uses SMB2J items. There are some original worlds that have been replaced or been modified. For instance, World 1-4 is much harder which adds every enemy while World 6-4 uses SMB2J World 4-4 as a replacement. World 4-3 and World 4-2 warp area is also replaced due to the fact that the hurt blocks in the game use mushroom platforms. World 7-4’s loop command is much different than the original SMB1 so choose your path wisely. Some blocks now have poison mushrooms and are also invisible so be careful. Beating World 8-4 now saves the Mushroom Retainers instead of the princess and proceeds to World 9-1 and to World A-1. Most World #-3 stages have a hidden mushroom. Try your best to find it. Collecting coins can earn a 1-UP on a World #-1 level except World 9-1 and World A-1. If you look at the third trailer of Afterworld 8, you will notice that there are major changes to Version 1.1 compared to the new Version 2.0.
